Fundraising to save lives

On 24th March 2012, Roger suffered a cardiac arrest immediately after blowing the final whistle to end the game between South Normanton and Borrowash Victoria Reserves. Despite attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead on the pitch. No defibrillator (Automated External Defibrillator) was available at the ground to aid resuscitation attempts.

The family has raised money with the help of friends, work colleagues, referees, local football clubs and leagues, the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association and the Sheffield Star newspaper’s campaign ‘Safety on the Sidelines’.

£14,562 raised has had matched funding from the Brtish Heart Foundation to purchase 37 AEDs, installed at football and sports grounds across the South Yorkshire and East Midlands region, with support from Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Additionally, two AEDs have been donated by The Talbot Charity (now Dronfield Miners Arms Charity Circle) and Cardiac Science through St John Ambulance.

The remaining £120 has been donated to Unstone Junior School's fund to purchase their own defibrillator.
